Essential Criteria


A senior member of the School’s Executive Board, you will demonstrate proven administrative and organisational skills, as well as an ability to both formulate and implement strategic plans. In the wider context, you will show an excellent understanding of the broader Higher Education sector – both in the UK and globally – particularly in relation to learning and teaching, and student experience-related activities.

Selection Criteria:

  • Demonstrable experience of leading professional services and support teams with a proven track record of formulating and implementing pan-institutional strategy.
  • Demonstrable experience in senior management positions within Higher Education;
  • a proven track record of effective leadership and management;
  • a proven record of innovation, with significant experience of successful delivery against strategic objectives in either the public or private sector;
  • experience of successfully managing and executing complex projects and deploying IT solutions;
  • experience of coordinating, leading and supporting strategic planning processes;
  • experience of working with trade unions.
  • The ability to provide strategic leadership, including the ability to develop and formulate strategic plans.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • good understanding of issues facing HE institutions and small specialist institutions in particular;
  • up to date knowledge of the UK Government’s policies and plans for higher education;
  • strong intellectual resources and abilities

Personal Characteristics

A strategic thinker with outstanding leadership and communication skills, you will be an enthusiast for the School’s mission, and able to demonstrate a high degree of professional judgement and integrity. You will work willingly and collaboratively as an effective member of the School’s Executive Board, undertaking collective responsibility and acting as a firm advocate of the School’s policies. Though flexible and responsive to change, you will possess the ability to make decisions to achieve demanding goals. You will demonstrate excellent people skills to ensure diplomatic and effective relationships at all levels.

You will be expected to stand in for the Director, and take actions with delegated authority when required.

Leadership Essentials:

  • The ability to participate enthusiastically as a member of the senior management team, demonstrating a consultative and collaborative outlook.
  • Persuasion and motivational skills to promulgate and ensure the effective delivery of School-wide strategy, and the ability to work with and through others at all levels; you must be able to persuade and work successfully with others across the institution, often without having official authority over them.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ambassadorial skills; you will enjoy the interface with the outside world and relish engaging with a range of partners external to the School.
  • The ability to forge positive and productive working relationships with the Director, the Pro-Director (Learning and Teaching) and the Pro-Director (Research and Enterprise).
